Sangoma and Hawks officers appear in court allegedly for stealing police ammunition
"The three suspects were granted bail when they appeared in court on Monday."
The two Hawks officers and a Soshanguve traditional healer, who were arrested last week for stealing police ammunition, were released on bail on Monday.
The Hawks officers, Lieutenant Colonel Refiloe Maria Elizabeth Mnisi (45) and Captain Mapatsi Thandi Mooka (41) appeared at the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday.
Mnisi was released on bail of R3 000 and Mooka was granted R2 000 bail.
Elizabeth Chabalala (44), a traditional healer, appeared in the Pretoria North magistrate’s court and was granted bail of R1 000.
Chabalala is facing a charge of possession of ammunition while Mnisi is facing a charge of theft of ammunition and Mooka is facing a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said Mnisi Colonel and Mooka work at the supply chain management’s Hawks national headquarters in Silverton.
The arrest came after a tip-off about Mnisi intending to supply SAPS ammunition to a traditional healer which resulted in a sting operation.
“Chabalala was subsequently arrested at her place of residence in Soshanguve on May 27 after an exchange was made.
“She was charged with illegal possession of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property following the seizure of other items suspected to belong to the state,” Mbambo said.
Mbambo said further investigations led to Mnisi’s arrest who was charged with theft and dealing in ammunition.
Meanwhile, Mooka was arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice after it was discovered that “she tried to conceal evidence in the case”.
Chabalala’s case was postponed to July 12, while the Hawks officers’ matter was postponed to June 27 for further investigation.
