Two Nellmapius girls injured after wall collapses on them

A suspect involved in a high-speed chase with the police crashed into the wall, which then collapsed on the children.

Two girls, aged nine months and two, were admitted to Mamelodi hospital after a wall collapsed on them in Nellmapius on Tuesday, May 31.

The wall collapsed when a suspect crashed through the residential wall during a high-speed chase with the police, said Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit spokesperson Casper Visser.

Visser said the two children were playing in their yard with the caretaker, who was about 3m away from them when the suspect crashed through the wall.

He said the older girl suffered a serious injury to the head and the younger girl suffered minor injuries.

Visser described the nine-month-old girl’s escape from injury as a “miracle”.

“Both were stabilised on the scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital for further care,” he said.

Visser said the suspect abandoned his vehicle and jumped the wall and escaped capture by the police.
