Officers managed to apprehend one suspect while the other fled.
The Tshwane metro police ceremonial unit members have arrested a notorious criminal after he robbed a young man in Ga-Rankuwa, Masakeng on Monday, May 30.
The young man had pointed out two men he accused of robbing him of cash, a cellphone and a bicycle after hitting him with a firearm in the head to the officers, according to Tshwane metro police (TMPD) spokesperson Isaac Mahamba.
“The officers were performing their duties when they heard a very alarming scream from a young man.
“They rushed to where the scream was coming from and found a young man bleeding from the head,” he said, adding that the young man pointed out to the officers the two men he accused of robbing and assaulting him.
He said as the officers approached, the two abandoned the bicycle and fled into the bushes on foot and the officers gave chase.
Mahamba said the officers apprehended one of the alleged robbers while the other evaded them.
“As they were busy arresting the suspect, community members approached and some identified the suspect as one of the notorious robbers who is terrorising and robbing community members as they walk to the mall.
“One person alleged that he was robbed at gunpoint by the same suspect,” he said, adding that the community member alleged the suspect took his money, cell phone and clothes and also assaulted him in a previous incident.
Mahamba said the officers managed to recover all the items taken from the complainant.
Mahamba congratulated the two officers for responding swiftly to the young man’s call for help.
Mahamba said TMPD would continue to serve and protect the City of Tshwane.
He said TMPD would investigate further to apprehend the suspect still at large.
He said the arrested man would appear in court soon to face charges of armed robbery.
He invited community members who might have more information regarding this incident to contact the nearest SAPS or TMPD on 012 358 7095/6.
