Woman (50) dies in car fire

The cause of the fire is currently not known and police are awaiting a post-mortem.

A 50-year-old woman was found dead in her car after it caught fire on the N4 on Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking to Rekord, Boschkop police spokesperson Sergeant Yeroboam Mbatsane said a white Toyota Yaris hatchback was found burning a few metres from the road.

Mbatsane said it didn’t look like the fire was a result of a car accident, because there was no damage to the car or road infrastructure.

He said the cause of the fire is therefore not known.

“We are waiting for the post-mortem,” he said.

According to Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen, the woman was alone in the car.

He said she was trapped inside the vehicle and could not escape.

“A local towing company was on the scene 10 minutes after they received reports, and they tried to extinguish the fire but it was too strong.

“The fire department arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the fire but it was unfortunately too late,” he said.

Tshwane emergency medical services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said most of the fire was confined inside the car.

“The fuel tank and the tyres were not affected by the fire.

“Firefighters had to force the engine compartment open to cut the battery loose because the hooter was on,” he said.

Mabaso added that firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to open the car doors to enable forensic pathologists to retrieve the body from the vehicle.

The firefighters also had to extinguish a veld fire which resulted from the vehicle fire.
