“The other four suspects [in the Hyundai] drove off when they realised that the bakkie they hijacked was stopped by the TMPD,” he said.

Tshwane metro police arrested two suspects for hijacking, pointing of a firearm and possession of illegal firearms on Mabopane highway on Thursday.

The arrests came after five suspects, who were driving a Hyundai Sonata, hijacked a bakkie from a Pakistani male, according to Tshwane metro spokesperson Senior Superintendent Issac Mahamba.

“TMPD reacted swiftly and stopped the bakkie on the highway at the Ruth First Street off-ramp.

“The driver of the bakkie was arrested.

“The other four suspects [in the Hyundai] drove off when they realised that the bakkie they hijacked was stopped by the TMPD,” he said.

Mahamba said the officers gave chase, and the suspects abandoned the Hyundai near Soshanguve Block L and fled on foot.

“The officers managed to apprehend a suspect.

“The vehicle they were driving in was searched and officers found three firearms, of which one was a Glock similar to the service pistol used by the TMPD.

“The other two firearms are similar to SAPS pistols,” he said.

Mahamba said the hijacked bakkie was recovered.
