The fun walk offers residents an opportunity to have fun while being active and to know about the activities Impilo 0720 sport centre of excellence for the children of Mamelodi.
A local organisation held a campaign in the streets of Mamelodi to commemorate Child protection month and raise the awareness of tennis on Saturday.
Sizwe Radebe of Impilo 0720 sport centre of excellence, which promotes tennis as a sport, said the 2.4km walk sought to highlight the participation in sport for a healthier lifestyle among the residents of Mamelodi.
Radebe said it was important to keep the children busy with sports and away from crime and drugs.
He said the centre hosted street tennis sessions every second week of the month around Mamelodi.
“The walk offered the children, parents and other stakeholders who attended fun activities and an opportunity to learn about the offerings of the centre,” he said.
“Tennis lessons are from Monday to Friday in the afternoon, and we also help children with their schoolwork – we teach them indigenous games and discuss social issues affecting them.”
The 2.4km walk started at Mamelodi West tennis court at 08:00 and circled back to the venue followed by a session of indigenous games and a mini tennis tournament.
Relebogile Maake (10) won the Junior level and Scelo Sibanyoni, the Open level. Both walked away with trophies while all participants were awarded with certificates.
The event was also attended by the members of civil rights movement, #Notinmyname International and ward 67 councillor Sizwe Tsiane.
Tsiane addressed the attendees on the importance of education and warned the children to stay away from crime.
He also encouraged them to be vigilant and report any undesirable behaviour.
A #NotInMyName representative addressed the crowd on what the organisation was about and and how it helped the community.
They further talked about the safety of children, child abuse and human trafficking.
Radebe said they had observed a lot of changes in children that participated in the centre’s activities including better discipline, respect and leadership.
He invited anyone who wishes to donate tennis training equipment to contact Sizwe Radebe on 072 117 0961.
