Mams comedian and tutor advises youth to engage with positive people

Local comedian and maths tutor wants to upskill the youth of Mamelodi.

A local comedian and mathematics tutor dreams of starting a big tutoring company to upskill the youth of Mamelodi.

Ignatius Letswalo (24) of Mamelodi West section D6 is a maths and science tutor as well as a meme comedian.

He describes himself as a goal-orientated and hardworking young man who dreams of owning a company to upskill the youth who are passionate about achieving their goals.

Letswalo’s dedication to tutoring won him best tutor of the year at Ikamva youth in 2019 and an outstanding collaboration and peer support innovation award in 2020.

He said from a young age he wanted to be an engineer even before he learned there were different fields of engineering.

“I am now studying to be a civil engineer part-time,” he said.

Letswalo said he became a comedian during the hard Covid-19 pandemic lockdown because “I was bored and had nothing to do”.

He said he would post jokes to Facebook.

He started by composing a meme a while ago taking the mickey out of people who woke up in the morning while wearing their gowns and sleepers, with a cup of coffee in hand, walked to their parked car outside to kick its tyres “just to check if all was still okay with their car”.

Letswalo said despite plenty of discouraging user comments, he had continued to post the funny memes.

He said his third meme trended even outside South Africa and “got celebrities calling me for meetings and gigs” after sharing my memes.

“That’s how my career as a comedian came about,” he said.

He encouraged the youth to follow their dreams and passions “whatever you think is possible… do what you love and what makes you happy”.

Letswalo said the youth needed to engage more with people with a positive mindset, read books so that they are informed and learn new things.

“You don’t get what you wish from life but what you work hard for,” he said.
