Metro hosts successful spelling bee

The Tshwane metro hosted a spelling bee competition for intermediate phase learners.

The Tshwane metro and the Department of Social Development and Community Services recently hosted a spelling bee competition for primary school learners across Tshwane.

The metro held a prize ceremony to honour the winners, said social development MMC Peggy de Bruin.

De Bruin said the spelling bee primarily promoted the use of indigenous languages among learners between grades 4 to 7.

“The metro’s strategy is to host spelling bee competitions in the language that is mostly spoken in the hosting community.

“The spelling bee concept is derived from the National Department of Education’s programme and our department has embraced this programme as part of its activities in the approved service delivery and budget implementation plan programme,” she said.

She said the campaign sought to attract at least 210 regional finals and 50 city finals participants.

The winners received the following prizes:

– Regional finals: certificate and R1 000 book voucher for first prize; certificate and R750 for second; and certificate and R500 for third.

– City finals: R3 000 uniform voucher, Reading is Fun medal, certificate and floating trophy for first prize; R2 000 uniform voucher, medal and certificate for second; and R1 000 uniform voucher, medal and certificate for third.

“The metro is committed to supporting the development of our learners through education,” De Bruin said.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners and I want to see many learners participate in this competition in future.”
