Rietgat crèche kids dress up at Giant Stadium as Child Protection Week winds down

“The week is held every year to raise awareness of children’s rights as enshrined in South Africa’s Constitution.”

About 3 000 crèche learners commemorated this year’s Child Protection Week on Friday at Giant Stadium by dressing as doctors, nurses, police officers and whatever career they wanted to follow one day.

“The week is held every year to raise awareness of children’s rights as enshrined in South Africa’s Constitution,” said police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.

Maluleka said the children were told about various aspects of life including, but not limited to, health issues by the Department of Health.

Meanwhile, the Rietgat police and Social Development spoke about societal ills such as the dangers of drugs, bullying, abuse and human trafficking.

They were warned against talking to strangers.

This year’s campaign goes under the banner, “Let us all protect children during Covid-19 and beyond”.

Boitumelo Bopape (5) was pleased to be wearing a police uniform and promised to follow his dream of becoming a police officer one day.

“When I grow up, I want to fight crime and protect children,” said Boitumelo.

Another learner, Tshepo Sebopetja (5), said that he wanted to save lives and heal the world.

“I have a passion for helping people and I want to become a doctor,” said Tshepo.

A teacher, from the Atlegang Early Learning Centre, thanked the members of various departments for honouring the invitation.
