Mams girl (8) throat-slitting attempted murder case to go to trial next week

Mamelodi residents and various stakeholders came in their numbers to support the family.

The trial of a 31-year-old man accused of attempted murder after slitting an eight-year-old Mamelodi girl’s throat in April is set to start next Wednesday.

Accused Sipho Nkosi appeared briefly at the Mamelodi court on Monday.

Nkosi is also facing another gender-based violence-related charge from 2019.

Mamelodi man accused of attempted murder for slitting a throat of an eight-year-old girl was transferred to Pretoria regional court for trial set for June 15.

Following Nkosi’s appearance in court on Monday, the girl’s father said the family was happy that the case was progressing.

The father, who cannot be named to protect the girl’s identity, hoped the court will set an example by imposing a hefty sentence.

“The sooner the case closes, the sooner the healing process can start,” he said.

The girl, who had to be rushed to ICU after the attack, had since been discharged and was recovering.

Her father said due to the severe trauma from the incident, she was in the care of social workers and undergoing counselling.

On April 24, the accused reportedly slit the minor’s throat with a sharp object following an alleged argument with the girl’s mother.

Nkosi was detained at the Hammanskraal police station before being transferred to Mamelodi police station.

The family is being supported by #NotInMyName International, the ANC Women’s League and the Mamelodi Women’s Brigade who protested outside the court room.

Almost 100 community members recently signed a petition for the accused to be denied bail.
