New app lets Gauteng road users report potholes
"This data is very important as it provides us with a sample of the maintenance work required."
There are 728 potholes in Gauteng – 137 of them in Tshwane – if a new app that lets people report potholes to the Gauteng transport department was to be believed.
The PotholeFixingGP reporting app was launched last month.
It allows road users to report potholes and other road defects to it speedily.
The app is part of the province’s smart mobility weekends programme and allows road users to report poor road conditions and other road maintenance issues to the department.
Seventy-three road defects were reported on provincial roads while 650 were on municipal roads, according to MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo.
Mamabolo said he appreciated the increasing use of the app after its launch on May 23.
“We are pleased with the take-up, seeing that more people are downloading and using the app. More than 4 000 people have thus far downloaded and used it,” he said.
He said the Department of Roads and Transport has partnered with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to develop the app to improve the condition of the provincial road network.
“Since its launch, we have received the first set of data which gives us insights into maintenance challenges on our roads,” Mamabolo said.
He said across the five developmental corridors of Gauteng, Emfuleni local municipality received 39 defects, followed by Mogale City with 32 defects reported, while the Rand West municipality received 21, with Lesedi and Merafong local municipalities each receiving one complaint.
“This data is very important as it provides us with a sample of the maintenance work required and helps us plan better on resources deployment. This ensures that resources are made available where they are needed most.”
The PotholeFixGP app is downloadable from Google Play Store.
It was still due for launch on devices such as the Huawei and Apple stores.
