Train, bus and taxi commuters warned of increase in muggings in north

Train, bus and taxi commuters in the north of Pretoria have been advised to walk in groups to deter criminals from mugging them this winter.
A recent increase in muggings in the area has prompted the Rietgat police to increase patrols in the area, according to police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.
He said criminals were taking advantage of the earlier evenings in the wintertime to target commuters boarding public transport.
Commuters using the Mabopane station were especially encouraged to walk in groups.
“Community members using public transport are further urged to leave early from parties, funerals and weddings so that they reach their destinations before sunset.”
Maluleka also advised community members to avoid shortcuts or meeting in isolated areas, especially at night or early in the mornings.
“Cellphone users should refrain from chatting while walking in the dark because then they are not focused on their surroundings and that’s when criminals pounce.”
He said joggers should also refrain from using their phones while running by the side of the road in the early hours of the morning.
