Frequent flooding in Zwartkops a health hazard

The holes that these burst water pipes create in the road are also a major cause of concern.

Zwartkops residents have experienced severe flooding and are demanding answers from the metro.

Those living on Hippo Avenue bore the brunt of the flooding, on Thursday morning.

According to residents, the flooding was caused by a burst water pipe.

“It happened very early in the morning before we went to work.

“When we went outside we saw that our whole street was flooded.

“My husband went to work and his car fell into a hole created by the burst pipe,” said resident Melissa Andrews.

Fortunately the community came together to pull the car out with minimal damage.

Burst water pipes caused the road to flood.

Residents allege this isn’t the first time the water pipes in this area have burst and flooded the road.

“This was the third time we have experienced flooding this year.

“We phoned the metro and they came but didn’t do anything.

“The last time this happened it was the same story.

“They come out only to look at the problem, and then we have to wait a few days before anything gets done about it,” she said.

The holes that these burst water pipes create in the road are also a major cause of concern.

Residents say the metro makes very little attempt to fix the holes, and they only get deeper and wider as time goes by.

Zwartkops residents have subsequently taken it into their own hands to repair the holes, but said they shouldn’t be doing the metro’s work for them.

“The lack of service we get is unacceptable.

“We pay taxes just like everybody else, only to have to do the metro’s work for them,” said Andrews.

The metro came and fixed the burst pipes on Friday.

Comment from the City of Tshwane will be published as soon as it has been received.
