Police chopper lands at Moot primary school as part of school safety campaign

“Learners from grades 6 and 7 were taught about the dangers of social media, bullying, human trafficking, substance abuse, children’s rights and the rights of teachers.”

Children from Laerskool Eben Swemmer in Frederika Street, Gezina, were surprised when officers from the SAPS, its K9 unit as well as its airwing arrived at the school with blazing lights and sirens along with a police chopper descending from the sky.

It was all part of a school safety and children’s awareness campaign held in conjunction with the Moot CPF and the TMPD in addition to private security and medical services.

“Learners from grades 6 and 7 were taught about the dangers of social media, bullying, human trafficking, substance abuse, children’s rights and the rights of teachers,” said police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt.

Teachers and learners were also informed about criminal activities such as cellphone robberies, illegal substances and theft by Vispol commander Lieutenant-Colonel William Suping and social crime co-ordinator Seargent Rhina Moseki.

Safety tips such as not getting into strangers’ cars and staying inside school premises while waiting to be picked up were dispensed.

“They were also told of the police toll-free 10111 number they can use when they are in danger or need help at their homes,” Breedt added.

Learners were, however, sternly warned not to phone the number to fool around.

Learners were given ample time to meet their heroes in uniform and enjoyed seeing the police chopper, vehicles and ambulance.
