Police nab 500 suspects in Vhuthu Hawe operations
"The operations were held throughout the 36 police stations of Tshwane from Thursday to Sunday night."
Five hundred people were arrested in a Vhuthu Hawe operation over the weekend, starting Thursday and ending on Sunday evening.
The operation was led by Tshwane police district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine and senior management.
It was held throughout the 36 police stations of Tshwane.
These operations included crime reduction, prevention of so-called trio and contact crimes, tracing of wanted suspects and intelligence-driven operations, according to police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.
Selepe said police held roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints during the operations.
“Motorists were stopped and searched for illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal firearms, illicit goods, stolen livestock, and to ensure that vehicles travelling on the public roads were roadworthy and drivers were not driving while under the influence of alcohol.”
She said over R50 000 worth of Aarto fines were issued, 1 897 vehicles and 3 109 people were searched.
Among those arrested, 200 were nabbed during the tracing of wanted suspects by detective teams.
“Other suspects were found to have committed serious and violent crimes such as rape, sexual assault, murder, car hijacking, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery, theft, fraud, possession of drugs, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Other arrests are as follows: undocumented persons (66), driving under the influence of alcohol (23) and drug-related crimes (27).
Seventy-two warnings were issued for consuming alcohol in public.
A total of 12 unlicensed liquor outlets were shut down this weekend and four illegal firearms were seized.
“Meanwhile, a total of eight theft or hijacked vehicles and four unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered in separate successes in the district.”
Selepe said all arrested suspects will appear in various courts in Tshwane in due course.
