Traffic light cables stolen on R55 in Erasmia
The traffic light was found on the ground after criminals cut it and stole the cables on the inside of the light.
Residents and motorists were shocked to discover that cables from a traffic light were stolen in the early hours of Thursday, June 30.
A traffic light on the corner of R55 and Main Street in Erasmia was found on the ground after criminals cut it and stole the cables inside.
According to Shakeel Bhaktawar from the councillor’s office, the traffic lights had been out of order for more than a month.
Bhaktawar suspects that criminals took the opportunity to steal the cables because they had not been working for a while.
He said the councillor’s office has, however, requested the metro to install stop signs while they wait for the traffic lights to be repaired.
“We’ve had a lot of car accidents in the past because these traffic lights don’t work,” Bhaktawar said.
“A car recently rolled over after a collision at the same intersection where the motorist drove past the robots without checking for on-coming traffic.”
Bhaktawar said the councillor’s office has sent a request to the metro to look into this matter as the R55 is a busy route to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
He said traffic is already an issue during peak hours as motorists coming from all parts of Pretoria and Johannesburg are using the road.
“We wish for the metro to at least implement a three-way stop for the time being as the R55 is one of the busiest roads,” he said.
“The R55 is notorious for faulty traffic lights and we feel that the issue needs urgent attention.”
