Matric learner to represent SA at the International Polo Crosse series
Jeanique Roodman will play for the junior u.21 team in a test match against Zambia, Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom from July 8 to 10 at the Underberg Polo Crosse Club.
“Behind every great daughter is a truly amazing dad.”
This couldn’t be more evident for Jeanique Roodman who watched her father take part in polo crosse tournaments when she was younger, and now she has been selected to represent South Africa at the Polo Crosse International Series in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Hoërskool Montana learner will play for the junior u.21 team in a test match against Zambia, Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom from July 8 to 10 at the Underberg Polo Crosse Club.
Her father, Ryk Roodman, recently played for the South African veterans against Zimbabwe.
When asked what sparked her interest in the sport she said, “my dad’s been playing since his young days, I always used to go to tournaments with him but never actually thought about playing”.
“Until one day when he brought a couple of racquets to pony camp and us kids started playing, and that is all I wanted to do.”
After hearing the news that she had been selected, she felt excited and grateful as this had been one of her goals and she is humbled to have achieved it.
“Playing my favourite sport on my beloved animal is a match made in heaven,” said Jeanique.

The matric learner had to find a balance between school and sport as she plans on studying law, and has learnt to prioritise her schoolwork before horse riding.
She added that she had to learn to adapt and study amid the chaos between and during tournaments.
Her advice to other students who are trying to find a balance between school and sport is to work hard, study hard but also live a little.
“Always keep your eyes on your Creator and remember you are your only competition.
“Circumstances will never be perfect to live your dreams. Adapt, be flexible but be consistent with your actions towards your goals,” she concluded.
