Man is caught stealing safety locks

The suspect was in possession of a bag with 18 safety locks.

A man was arrested when he was caught stealing safety locks from an electricity box in Booysens on Tuesday, July 19.

The suspect was in possession of a bag that had 18 suspected stolen safety locks, said TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

Mahamba said the TMPD cable theft unit also caught the suspect tampering with electricity infrastructure.

“The suspect was also found with a key that is only used by the energy and electricity department,” said Mahamba.

“He was arrested for possession of stolen locks and tampering with essential infrastructure.”

This modus operandi is under investigation to uncover what the criminals do with the safety locks.

In a separate incident, a man was arrested when he broke into the TMPD regional office in Mabopane to alleged steal car parts.

The suspect was seen by community members jumping over the TMPD walls on Tuesday, said Mahamba.

He said the Mabopane region office has previously experienced similar cases where suspects broke in to steal car parts.

“Region 1 sector 1 officers responded swiftly to the information received and apprehended the suspect,” he said.

“The suspect was found with equipment used to break into cars and could not account as to why he was on the premises.”

Mahamba said the suspect was arrested and charged with trespassing and possession of car-breaking equipment.
