Police arrest over 20 people during north operation
Five suspects who were allegedly involved in housebreaking were arrested after firing shots at metro police officers.
To keep the streets crime-free in the north of Pretoria, law enforcement agencies arrested over 20 suspects during a multidisciplinary operation on September 1.
During the early hours of the operation, five suspects who were allegedly involved in housebreaking were arrested after firing shots at metro police officers.
A case of attempted murder was opened at the Akasia police station after preliminary investigations noted that the TMPD officers were at a filling station in Rosslyn when they encountered a suspicious red Toyota Corolla speeding off.
“Officers followed the vehicle and ordered it to stop. The driver stopped on Doreen Road and was approached.
“An occupant fired shots in the officer’s direction while running out of the vehicle towards the bush. Police retaliated and a suspect was shot in the upper body,” said Akasia police spokesperson Lindiwe Mabasa.
Mabaso said a swift response from police officers resulted in the successful apprehension of all suspects after a brief pursuit.
“A manhunt for the two suspects who had run into the bush ensued and all were [later] brought to book.”
Police searched the vehicle and found a TV, another firearm, one empty magazine and a black toy gun.
“The injured suspect was taken to George Mukhari academic hospital for treatment and the other four were taken into police custody.
“It is presumed that one officer was taken to hospital and is receiving treatment after the incident.”
The suspects were arrested for various crimes including drunk-driving, dealing drugs, possession of drugs, assault, operating illegal taverns and illegal gambling.
Acting station commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Frans Modise welcomed the arrest of all perpetrators and urged anyone with information that may assist in their successful conviction to call the Akasia police on 012 564 0700.
All suspects are expected to appear in neighbouring courts around Pretoria soon.
