Power restored in Pretoria east suburbs after substation cable fire

Early Wednesday morning, Pretoria east suburbs were affected by an unplanned power outage due to damage of cables in an east power substation.

A Pretoria east power substation that experienced a cable fire that left suburbs without electricity on Wednesday morning was being fixed by the Tshwane metro.

Around 06:30 on Wednesday, residents reported smoke coming out of the Strulands substation which resulted in a power outage in several areas, including Die Wilgers, Equestria and Lydiana.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said electricity department teams were investigating the cause.

“So far an assessment has been done and found that a cable end or termination has burned or blown on one of the four main feeder cables,” he said.

Mashigo said power was being restored to all affected areas.

“The substation’s load is sufficient to carry all the consumers receiving power from the secondary substation. Depot operational team is busy arranging resources to repair the faulty main feeder cable,” Mashigo said.

He urged councillors to report any areas that might not have power restored.
