Community encouraged to start backyard gardens to end GBV
The community believes that GBV is caused by unemployment and poverty as most people end up taking their frustrations on women and children.
Winterveld ward 24 councillor Chris Masiya has encouraged community members to participate in community agriculture programmes to end unemployment and gender-based violence (GBV).
The community believes that GBV is caused by unemployment and poverty as most people end up taking their frustrations on women and children.
On Friday the community held a GBV rally at Khubeka Stand to make their feelings and stand against GBV known.
The community said GBV is a disease that won’t be allowed around in their area.
Masiya said women cannot afford to keep quiet when GBV happens.
“They have to know and exercise their rights. They must not suffer in silence. It’s important that we as leaders support women to deal with this issue of GBV,” he said.
Masiya said women must engage and form part of non-government organisations (NGO) and secure a way of making a living to stop their reliance on men.
He said as leaders it’s important that they support NGOs that shape the community.
He added that they have engaged the departments of agriculture and social development to help the community get into backyard gardening.
“We will give them seeds for starters to make sure that we eradicate poverty and we have full support from the department and our NGOs will oversee the programme,” he said.
