WATCH: Prosecution ensues in TMPD officers caught on video asking for R1 000 bribe case

“I trust you because you are an old man. I am giving you your driver’s licence and will follow you to the garage to withdraw,” the officer can be heard saying.

Four TMPD officers appeared in court on Friday after allegedly being caught extorting R1 000 from a man on the N1.

Recorded video footage is doing the rounds on social media in which an officer is heard asking for a bribe from a motorist.

In the video, a TMPD officer instructs the motorist to drive to a nearby ATM to withdraw money to pay a bribe for allegedly speeding on the N1 near Midrand at the weekend. The officer can be heard saying: “I am going to give you an opportunity to go to the garage and withdraw the admission of guilt money.”

The motorist replies that he has a withdrawal limit of R1 000. The officer responds: “I trust you because you are an old man. I am giving you your driver’s licence and will follow you to the garage.”

TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the members were identified and arrested this past week.

“One was let out on bail of R2 000 on Thursday, while others will go back to court on Friday.”

He said internal disciplinary processes were to follow as the officers have been in police custody since their arrest.

“Internal disciplinary processes will start as soon as they [the officers] return to work.”

Last week, four TMPD officers were arrested for various alleged offences, including armed robbery, abduction, extortion and the possession of drugs.

An officer was arrested by Pretoria North police and the other three by Lyttelton police in Centurion.

MMC for community safety Grandi Theunissen said the arrests were the latest in a string of arrests of TMPD officers for alleged crimes.

“While many TMPD members work diligently to combat crime and lawlessness, their efforts are constantly undermined by those who are police officers by day and criminals at night.

“In the worst instances, crimes are even conducted while they are in uniform.”

“I would like to make it unequivocally clear that the metro has a zero tolerance approach to bribery, corruption and any illegal activities by those within our ranks.”

Theunissen vowed that officers involved in criminality will be identified, criminal charges will be laid where possible and full internal investigations will be carried out.
