TUT bow out of the women’s varsity football champs
They lost 1-5 to the University of Johannesburg in the semi-finals of the tournament.
The Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) hopes to reclaim the women’s varsity sports SA football title have come crashing down following a 1-5 defeat at the hands of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the semifinals on Friday.
UJ played like they were looking for revenge against a TUT side whose male counterparts defeated UJ men’s football team 1-2 last month in the finals.
TUT, which is the most successful side in the history of the competition after winning it six times in a row, were looking to add the seventh star to their red and blue jersey but UJ wouldn’t let that happen.
TUT started the tournament well earlier last week beating Durban University of Technology 5-0 followed by a 2-0 victory against the University of Witwatersrand on Wednesday.
However, TUT tasted their first defeat of the tournament at the hands of the defending champions University of Western Cape who beat them 2-1.
Coach Christina Kutumela will be proud of the amount of work her TUT team put in the opening matches before they came crashing down against the two sides that won three of their opening matches.
They scored nine goals in four matches and conceded seven goals in the last two matches.
They only managed to keep clean sheets in the first two matches.
