Local rugby boys treated to fun day

After four days of gruelling rugby excellence at the Afrikaner Volkseie Sport (AVS) Bokkie week from October 4-7, the local 7s North Transvaal team were spoiled by Councillor Leon Kruyshaar of Ward 1 on October 16.

Before the team could have a fun day out, they gave back to the community with a clean-up of the ward.

The boys hit the streets in their Gauteng North colours, armed with black bags to clean up their local community along with Kruyshaar and the team’s two coaches Bulla van der Merwe and George Neuhoff, the youngest coaches in the AVS league.

Neuhoff was proud of his team, and said “they are a great group of young guys, always giving everything on and off the field. They make the best of every situation, win or lose”.

After giving back to their community, the team went to Grizzlies Waterpark for a treat to spend the day swimming and having fun. The swimming was short lived, however, as they couldn’t resist the nearby fields and spent the rest of the day playing the sport that united them.

The team received their certificates on the day, handed to them by the councillor and their coaches.

The trick behind a successful team is the mutual respect between the coaches and the team, says Van der Merwe. “As young coaches, we try to create a great experience and a love for the game.”

He says that their advantage as young coaches is that they still remember their own coaches and can relate more with their young team. “We try to be fair and selfless, motivate the players and try to create teamwork, discipline and respect.”
