SAWS issues yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in parts of Gauteng
The service said that the thunderstorms are slow moving, and may result in localised flooding over parts of the West Rand, and spreading towards the City of Johannesburg. SAWS predicts at least a 60% chance of rain for Pretoria for the remainder of the week.
The South African Weather Service issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunder storms over parts of Gauteng from 15:00 to 21:00 on October 19.
A yellow level 2 warning is given for weather events with a high likelihood, but with a minor impact.
The service said that the thunderstorms are slow moving, and may result in localised flooding over parts of the West Rand, and spreading towards the City of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and the rest of the West Rand.
Saws predicts at least a 60% chance of rain for Pretoria for the remainder of the week, with temperatures dipping to highs of 26 °C over the weekend.
Yellow level 2 warnings were also issued for parts of KwaZulu-Natal that could result in localised flooding, damaging winds and excessive lightening.
The seasonal forecast for the area is predicted to have above normal rainfall, as the La Nina system still has its effects over Southern Africa.
Previously Rekord reported that SAWS expert Cobus Olivier said “as we expect the whole of the summer season to receive above-normal rainfall, the increased chances of flooding will remain for the whole summer season. It is unfortunately not possible to forecast specific flooding events during the season in a seasonal forecast, we can only advise the public that the chances of flooding is increased during this summer season.”
