Ladium’s A student’s trip made possible
Laudium learner thankful for the support she got from the community.
Shakira Govender of Himalaya secondary school is set to compete in the World Scholars Cup in November at Yale University.
This is after the 16-year-old Laudium learner qualified to participate in the next round of the tournament in Cape Town.
Local charity, PAJ community development raised R31 000 to cover the cost of Govender’s trip to compete in the next round.
PAJ said as an organisation it could not sit back and watch a little girl’s dream be shattered because she couldn’t afford to travel to Cape Town and fulfill her dreams.
“If you don’t know who Shakira is, she is one of the brightest young minds in Laudium. Not being able to raise R31 000 to cover the cost of a trip to Cape Town, Shakira conceded that she was not going to compete in the World Scholars Cup.
“After hearing about this, the PAJ team decided to step in and assist with raising funds. Within three days of us starting this initiative, we managed to raise enough to get Shakira into the competition, as well as provide her with a bit of spending money,” the PAJ statement read.
Shakira showed her appreciation by thanking all those who contributed towards her trip and making it possible for her to realise her dreams.
“A huge thank you to everyone who saw potential in me and helped me take a step closer to achieving my dreams. Words cannot express my gratitude, thank you,” she added.
However, the organisation revealed that Govender still need funds to travel to Yale.
PAJ said it remained hopeful that the money will be available through the help of the community and business.
“We am confident that with the school and community’s help, she will [go].”
PAJ thanked all those who assisted Govender in making her Cape Town trip a reality.
It urged all those who wished to contribute towards the good work the organisation is doing, to donate towards its education trust.
“If you would like to help us help more people achieve their dreams, you can contribute to the PAJ.”
The organisation also assists in animal rescue, medical, feeding, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programmes to reduce the population of stray cats and homing of animals.
The NGO also assists in making sure the community patrollers in the area have the latest technologies to fight crime.
