Local NGO gives cancer the ‘Zen treatment’

A local NGO, the Zen Foundation and partners are hosting a netball tournament at Tuks for cancer awareness this October 29.
The charity drive is aimed at raising funds to support cancer victims.
Chairperson and founder of the foundation, Zwakalisile Masuku, said the event was not solely about breast cancer but about creating awareness of the disease, addressing the lesser-known forms like oral cancer.
“This initiative is about women-based organisations coming together for a worthy cause. It’s about giving back to the cancer community and informing residents on the importance of knowing about different types of cancer,” said Masuku.

“Cancer affects women’s skin, breast, lungs, colorectal, uterus – the list goes on. We simply are not educating ourselves about it, what causes it and how to prevent it.”
The Pretoria-based organisation has worked previously with the Pretoria State Theatre, Lima Academy, the South African Traditional Music Achievements (Satma) Awards, renowned artist Arthur Mafokate, community counsels and multiple municipal mayors.
Some of the confirmed partners for the netball tournament this weekend included the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, Clicks, Virgin Active, McDonald’s, and the Hatfield Motor Group.
The Zen Foundation appealed to any interested stakeholders to get in contact with them as funding remains an issue.
“It’s challenging finding youths that are interested in volunteering because there are no salaries. Also, we still have to pay to use government properties such as halls and auditoriums.”
The foundation was founded in 2015 and its work includes a cultural event and an online skills development training programme.
“Each time we are inside the fire, we should always remember that we are not fighting only for ourselves to get out, but for those inside the fire with us,” said Masuku.
