Lyttelton Police Station organises a march in honour of GBV survivors

Members of the Lyttelton police station and its stakeholders were on Friday putting up banners and posters for Saturday’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) march

Members of the Lyttelton police station and its stakeholders were on Friday putting up banners and posters for Saturday’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) march.

The purpose of Saturday’s march is to create awareness of trying to put a stop to GBV and also to recognise the survivors.

The Station organised the march just days before the launch of 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children campaign. The 16 days of activism normally take place from November 25th to December 16th.

Other key commemorations due to take place in this period are International Human Rights Day, World Aids day, and International day for persons with disabilities, which will take place on December 3.

Marike van Copenhagen from Khula NGO said they were there as one of the stakeholders responsible for offering support to children who were suffering from substance abuse.

“Substance abuse is one of the major causes of GBV, so our role is to give support to women and children suffering from substances. So some of our colleagues are based here at the police station, and they are ready to offer any assistance to GBV Survivors,” Copenhagen added.

At the same time, Christo Landsberg from The Way Recovery told Rekord their role was to assist GBV victims by placing them at rehabilitation centers.

“Our primary role as NGO is to place GBV and Drug survivors into rehab, as the majority of them cannot afford private rehabs as they were too costly.” Landsberg said.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Kenny Manyamula said they were expecting about 100 participants to attend Saturday’s event.

“We are expecting a minimum of at least 100 people, so we won’t be closing any roads for the march as we will only be walking on the side of Hendrick Verwoerd Road,” Manyamula added.

He also said the march was brought together with the help of their partners, khuluma family counseling, cosup Oliven, Centurion Mall, the Community policing forum, Mafulo NGO, Morudi cares, and Centurion Taxi Rank.

Saturday’s march will start at the Lyttelton Police station at 8am and end at the Centurion Taxi rank where a GBV billboard will be unveiled.
