West SAPS talk festive safety
Recently we have had cases reported of cars hijacked when people were about to open a gate outside their driveway.
Residents leaving for the holidays are advised to maintain good terms with their neighbours, as it is they who will be available to keep an eye out on your property. The police believe that if communities work together in this fashion it will decrease the number of housebreakings that occur during this time of year.
Police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma advises motorists to be extra vigilant in the area and to always check their rear-view mirror to ensure that they are not being followed.
“Be on the lookout for any suspicious vehicles following you, especially while driving home in the afternoon. Recently, we have had cases reported of cars being hijacked when people were about to open a gate outside their driveway. So we urge motorists to be on the lookout for any suspicious vehicles. If you notice any, change routes to confirm whether you’re being followed,” said Vuma.

“Motorists are also advised to not leave valuables such as phones, laptops, cameras, handbags, etc. in their car, especially in plain view.
“Criminals in the west target unsuspecting car owners who use convenience shops, leaving their vehicles unattended. Motorists are advised to ensure their vehicle is locked.
“Residents must know the importance of reporting a crime. This enables SAPS to join forces with community forums or neighbourhood watches successfully in doing operations and working effectively together to curb crime in communities.”
West residents can report crimes on 012 327 4907 or 012 327 4908, or use the crime hotline at 0800 10111.
