Community takes a stand against festive crime spikes

Garsfontein community policing representatives gathered for a mass patrol of the area to create unity through visibility.

The Garsfontein Community Police Forum (CPF) took a stand against crime with a mass visibility patrol on Thursday, November 17.

This followed an increase in priority crimes reported over the past few weeks in Constantia Park, Waterkloof Glen and Moreleta Park within the Garsfontein Police Precinct.

Deputy chair for Garsfontein CPF, Llewellyn Reinecke, said: “The community took hands and joined the Mass Visibility Drive in a unified front and as a show of force.

“We received excellent support from Garsfontein SAPS, along with Bull Security, FADT Security and National Security.”

He said 48 vehicles formed a convoy lasting 90 minutes and covering about 23km.

“Our goals are to reaffirm our commitment to standing up against crime as a community, and creating unity through visibility in our police precinct.

“The patrol covered a wide area, focusing on shopping centres, schools and open parks and spaces, with the main aim of increasing security visibility and taking a stand against crime in the area.”

Crime has been shown to increase during the festive season, with Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) showing crime historically doubled from the period just before the festive season.

“Residents are urged to test their alarm systems with their security company, as well as to get involved in their local CPF.

“The CPF further encourages residents to meet their neighbours, obtain their contact details and stand up together against crime in a unified front,” said Reinecke.

He said the CPF representatives in the respective areas would be continuing their patrols through the festive season.
