Soshanguve NPO donates sanitary towels to schools in Soshanguve
“Most schools don’t expect donations during this time of the year considering that the year is almost over.”
A Soshanguve NPO has donated sanitary towels to Baleseng Junior secondary school through their Exam Pads programme.
The Soshanguve Neighbourhood Watch Patrol Unit started the programme after they saw the shortage of sanitary towels in schools while they were patrolling.
“When we are on school premises, we see things and we ask questions. We found out that there was a shortage of sanitary towels in schools,” the NPO’s spokesperson Thabiso Bonoko said.
“Most schools don’t expect donations during this time of the year considering that the year is almost over.
“The slowness of the government in supplying these in bulk is part of the reason why we started this. We wanted to take away hygiene stress as the learners start their exams,” he said.
He said they have witnessed a sense of relief in learners’ faces when they made the donations. Read also: Soshanguve encouraged to report crime despite concerns
“When we go to the boxes where they store sanitary towels, there’s literally nothing. In Hlophanang school we only found about seven pads. So when we get there they thank us a lot,” he said.
He added that they could even use the sanitary towels for next year.
The NPO in association with Lentswe la Baahi is asking for donations of as little as R20 or a pack or more to help assist them as they continue the programme.
They said a helping hand will ensure the success of the programme and make it sustainable.
“Your assistance will benefit a schoolgirl to prosper,” he said.
The NPO plans to continue donating to schools in Soshanguve and surrounding areas to reach more girls with this initiative.
They can be contacted on Facebook at Soshanguve Neighbourhood Watch Patrol Unit NPO or 076 216 8050.
