Quiet weekend ahead? Catch these live performances to pass the time

Pretoria has talent and a love for live music. This weekend will see the variety that Tshwane has to offer hit various stages with events to fit into your weekend calendar.

February 4 is National Beer Day in South Africa, and nothing goes better with a nice cold brewski than some lekker local music. Check out these artists this weekend.

Rooksein, February 3

Rooksein is a trio that has been hitting the Afrikaans music scene by storm since they debuted in 2018. Megan Danner, Dian Maritz and Renier van der Westhuizen released their debut album Die Onbekende in November last year, with the lead single “10 uit 10” receiving over a 100 000 streams on YouTube.

The Potchefstroom band will be jamming for Pretoria fans at Padstal from 21:00.

2to12, February 3

Another trio, but this time a bit more local and a bit more rock, 2to12 will be joined by Zadelhoff for a Friday night jam. Pretoria-based power trio 2to12, play hard rock tunes, built on heavy riffs and powerful vocals and is made up of Stean van der Walt, Thinus Scheepers and Dirk Jordaan.

With opening act Zadelhoff starting at 18:00 before 2to12 hits the stage at 19:00 at Jarr Bar.

Afrikan Roots, February 4

A bit of fusion can be expected from Pretoria house music band Afrikan Roots who are known for their signature sound called “chubba cabra” – an intermingling of African and urban music. The group uses African-rooted instruments, including the bongo drums (djembe), flutes, cowbells, agogô, congas, piccolo, maracas and much more.

Catch the best of Pretoria’s Afro-house with Kenneth “Nyekx” Manyemula, Katlego “Maspila” Mabasa, Bongumusa “Mosco” Mmotsa, and Arafat Mphahlele at the State Theatre from 18:00 t0 22:00.

Jan Jan Jan, February 4

When it comes to Afrikaans music, a boy band isn’t the first concept that comes to mind. However, Jan Jan Jan has broken the mould, even receiving a South African Music Award nomination for their song “Al Die Ysters”. The new year hasn’t seen the Jans slowing down with outreach projects in Pretoria with Helpende Hand and a brand new music video, “Braaf soos ’n Boerboel” released mid-January this year.

Jan Jan Jan can be seen at Padstal from 21:00.

Zahn, February 4

Zahn debuted in 2019 with her first album Masker which was well-received by the local music market. Since then, she has released several singles, including “Hart weer heelmaak”, “Dis hoe jy die wêreld verander” and “Vergifnis lei na vrede”. Zahn is a voice that has resonated in the music industry for a long time and she will not be silent anytime soon.

Zahn recently released her latest single, “Somerson”.

Catch Zahn’s soothing skillful voice at Stoep Stories in Magalieskruin from 18:30.
