Tshwane North District honours top achievers

Most learners who excelled in their matric exams were from schools in townships and rural areas in the Tshwane North District.

The Tshwane North District recently honoured its top achievers at the 2022 Matric Awards ceremony at HTS John Vorster, Pretoria Moot.

Those honoured included 52 learners and 31 schools, and the celebration happened after the matric pass rate in the district improved slightly in 2022 compared to 2021.

“The district’s pass rate improved by 0.26% but we are proud to say that, with the instability of the past years, we managed to obtain the current pass rate percentage,” Tshwane North district director Thea Coetser said.

The district’s current pass rate is at 83.5% and 43.8% of learners achieved bachelors, 28% diplomas and 38% distinctions.

Coetser announced that most learners who had excelled in their matric were from lower level schools, mostly found in the townships and rural areas.

“In the education system, we have quintiles with quintile 5 being our most affluent schools and quintile 1 the neediest schools.”

She said in quintile 1 they had 14 schools, quintile 2 five schools, quintile 3 four schools, quintile 4 seven schools and quintile 5 had 14 schools.

Among the district’s successes, five schools including Hoërskool Overkruin, Gereformeerde Skool Dirk Postma, Soshanguve Secure Centre, Iona Covent School and Hoërskool Oos-Moot obtained a 100% pass rate.
