UPDATE | Man talked down from roof after four hours in Sunnyside

"One of the Tshwane Emergency Services Department firefighters managed to convince the man who was attempting to commit suicide on top of a gym in Pretoria to come down."

The Tshwane Emergency Services Department attended to a call of a naked man atop the roof of a gym threatening suicide on Sunday afternoon.

“One of the Tshwane Emergency Services Department firefighters managed to convince the man who was attempting to commit suicide on top of a Virgin Active building in Pretoria to come down,” said the spokesperson for the Tshwane EMS, Deputy-chief Charles Mabaso.

The man eventually came down after 19:00 and was handed over to the South African Police Services.

The man had been on the top of the building for 4 hours.

Mabaso said that the man was suspected to be under the influence of narcotics and was threatening to stab himself with a broken bottle if anyone came close to him.

“Tshwane Emergency Services resources Engine 12 and Ladder 12 are on the scene,” said Mabaso.

“The man is alleged to be under the influence of narcotics and is threatening to stab himself with a broken bottle atop the building.”

The scene had been ongoing from around 15:00 on Sunday.

Mabaso said that the scene had been cleared, and the area was restored to normal.
