Severe rainy conditions headed for Pretoria
Pretoria residents warned that persistent rain could lead to flooding
Pretoria residents can expect persistent rain and thunderstorms for the rest of the week and the weekend.
On Thursday, Vox Weather issued a Yellow Two Warning for parts of Gauteng and warned that conditions could worsen overnight.
A Level Two warning includes disruptive rainfall and severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding.
Stormy conditions were expected to continue overnight in Pretoria with more widespread showers expected throughout the day.
Vox Weather forecasts that these conditions will persist into Saturday as well.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service predicted that Thursday’s temperatures would reach a low of 20°C and a high of 26°C for Pretoria.
Residents are urged to do the below when travelling on wet roads:
– Slow down when the road is wet. Avoid slamming on the brakes as this may cause the car to glide.
– Be prepared to move to the left shoulder in case of badly-timed overtaking from the opposite direction.
– Don’t panic when you see oil patches. Slow down gradually and steer through them.
– Approach bends in the road with caution with both hands on the steering wheel.
– Increase your safety cushion by doubling your following distance from three to six seconds.
– Turn on your headlights.
– Be mindful of other vehicles behind you as they are difficult to see through rain-spattered windows.
– Be extra careful within the first thirty minutes after the rain has started as grime and oil on the road surface mix with water and could cause the road to be slippery.
