Flooding causes havoc in Pretoria
The Hennops River has burst its bank and has led to widespread flooding in Centurion.
Consistent rainfall has led to flooding in many parts of Pretoria, and residents are urged to be careful.
The Hennops River has burst its banks, leading to widespread flooding and the closure of local roads.
“Two cars were stuck on Blackwood and Lyttelton roads,” said EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso.
“The occupants of both vehicles evacuated slowly and safely.”
Ravi, End streets and Blackwood Road were closed and remain so.
“Fortunately the water in Blackwood Road is dropping.”
Mabaso said the EMS is making a repeated call to motorists to desist from crossing low-lying bridges and risking their lives and those around them.
He also asks those who are finding shelter under bridges to evacuate because those areas are prone to flooding.
“We are monitoring the situation according to the SA weather service and we are expecting more rain this evening and going into the weekend.”
The police K9 and dive units are still searching for a man swept away by the Apies River near the Pretoria zoo on Thursday afternoon.
Mabaso said this was the second person to be swept away around the zoo in less than a week.
“For any emergency that is life threatening, please dial 107 which is a toll free number,” Mabaso concluded.
The Tshwane metro gave some tips for motorists to keep in mind when driving in severe rain, when the potential for flooding is high:
– Avoid low-lying bridges when it is raining, they are flood-prone.
– If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, exit through the window and get to higher ground as soon as possible.
– Always remain calm and do not panic when your car is submerged in water. Vehicles are replaceable.
– Calmly unbuckle your seatbelt and roll down your window to get out of the car.
– If your windows won’t open, let your car fill with water. You will then be able to open the doors.
– When outside the car, swim to the surface and get to dry ground before calling for help.
