M18 in Irene closed until further notice

Residents are asked to use alterative roads until the road is opened again

A portion of the M18 main road that runs through Irene has been closed.

According to councillor Gert Visser, the road was closed after the Department of Roads and Transport deemed it unsafe.

This is apparently due to subsidence running down the road.

“The road subsidence was investigated by the metro’s geologist last year, who advised that it was not a sinkhole and was most probably caused by a water leak which has since been repaired.
“Main Road has been closed in the vicinity of Alexandra Road in the north, and Main Road and Pioneer Road in the south,” said Visser.

Motorists are asked to use Alexandra Road, Albert Road and Nellmapius Drive as detours until the road is opened.

The department has not announced when the road will be repaired.
