Pretoria art museum to be upgraded

De Jager confirmed that numerous stakeholders, private companies and potential donors have been approached to assist in the effort.

Various meetings have been held to discuss upgrades to the central Pretoria art museum under the guise of “restoring its place in the city”.

Ward 92 councillor Leanne de Jager says that various meetings have been held with the curator of the museum, Dirk Oegema, and Arts Association to “establish where assistance can be provided in ensuring the sustainability and security of the arts in Tshwane”.

“In a follow-up meeting on February 9, a meeting was held with the various Tshwane metro officials and staff of the museum to establish immediate needs,” said De Jager.

Some of the issues discussed surrounding the nearly 60-year-old museum include grass cutting, safety and security, maintenance, lighting, fencing and retention of staff.

Due to the endeavour still being in its initial phases, the ward councillor could not divulge too much information concerning the plans.

De Jager though was able to confirm that numerous stakeholders, private companies and potential donors have been approached to assist in the effort.

“Other stakeholders and private companies will be approached to discuss further initiatives in encouraging the public to visit the extensive permanent exhibitions and the many future planned exhibitions,” De Jager continued.

The Arcadia-based museum has housed over 5 000 artworks since its inception. It is currently hosting an exhibition aimed at acknowledging its permanent collection by artists who taught or studied at the University of Pretoria between 1986 and 1992 under the theme “Another Time, Another Place”. The exhibition started on January 22 and ends on April 24.

“The museum is an integral part of the Tshwane metro’s art landscape and it is hoped that the metro will attract more artists and visitors with this initiative,” De Jager concluded.
