Security company warns Pta businesses of increase in robberies

Business owners are advised to be on high alert when transporting or carrying valuables such as cash, electronics, and other fast-moving goods.

Fidelity ADT has recently issued a warning to all businesses in the metro to exercise caution as business robberies increase.

Business owners were advised to be on high alert when transporting or carrying valuables such as cash, electronics and other fast-moving goods.

Fidelity ADT regional manager Leon Muller says that the increase in armed business robberies is occurring specifically around Centurion, Pretoria Central and Pretoria West.

“We are seeing an increase in business robberies, particularly at retail outlets like fast food outlets and garage shops, which are easily accessible. Business owners need to be vigilant, make sure their CCTV is working and remain vigilant for any suspicious activity,” Muller said.

“We recommend at least two staff members must always carry hidden panic buttons. Visitors to these outlets must also be especially vigilant. Generally, the suspects are after the till money and not out to rob the customers, but it is still a high alert situation.”

Fidelity ADT also recommends the following safety tips for businesses:

– Have controlled access for traffic flow in and out of your establishment. This goes for customers and staff, having clearly marked entrance and exit points to prevent over-crowding and give the advantage of keeping an eye on all activity.

– Implement solutions that help reduce shrinkage in the business.

– Be alert, especially during opening and closing times, have staff members work in pairs to avoid being overcome by criminals, and train staff to ask for identification before being allowed entry into the premises.

– Make sure all outside entrances and inside security doors are locked using deadbolts. Padlocks should be made of steel and kept locked at all times. Remove the serial numbers from your locks, to prevent unauthorised keys from being duplicated.

– Install windows with secure locks and burglar-resistant glass. Consider installing metal grates on all your windows except display windows as well.

– Light the inside and outside of your business, especially around doors, windows, skylights, or other entry points. Consider installing covers over exterior lights and power sources to deter tampering.

– Use the services of a reputable security company for protection. Regularly rotate security guards and insist that they are always vetted.

– Keep the cash register in plain view from the outside of your business, that way it can be monitored by police during the day or at night. Leave it open and empty after closing.

– Be sure your safe is fireproof and securely anchored. Change your security password when an employee who has had access to it leaves your business.

– Invest in an alarm, CCTV and other electronic surveillance technology that meets your level of security needs. Learn how your system works and check it daily. It is advisable to run a test when closing.

-Update your keyholders before closing your business for any holiday season. Make sure that all the relevant information is updated in case authorities need to contact you.

“We recommend that business owners in these high-risk areas consult their security providers to do a full risk assessment to ensure the premises and staff are fully protected against this type of crime,” Muller concluded.
