ActionSA demands police protect university students
“The students are demanding regular police patrols around university residences and campuses to safeguard students.”
Tshwane north college (TNC) students and ActionSA student chapter marched to the Soshanguve police station on Tuesday to demand protection following the rape of a student recently.
Joined by the EFF, the group called for an end to gender-based violence and injustice faced by women on a daily basis.
“We received a call around midnight from the student and we quickly rushed to her place. When we arrived, we found her inside the police van and we asked the police if they are taking her to the hospital to obtain medical assistance and they agreed,” said ActionSA student chapter convenor Tshepiso Modiba.
The student was attacked in her room on March 1 as she returned from an SRC election celebration.
Modiba said the group had taken the woman to Soshanguve police station on March 4 to open a case but was told to go open it at a police station in Ga-Rankuwa instead.
The group further organised another protest to ensure the SAPS listened to its complaints.
“The victim identified the suspect but so far nothing is being done, this march was a wake-up call for the police and college management to prioritise student safety.”
The ActionSA student chapter called on the college to take action on behalf of their student.
Rekord contacted the college but were unable to get a comment.
Modiba said TNC was shortsighted for refusing to get involved in finding a solution to the student accommodation crisis.
“As soon as the new SRC is constituted we will take the matter further against the institution,” he further added.
A Soshanguve police station visible policing commander said Soshanguve did open the rape case and the victim is already in communication with the investigating officer.
