TUT and protesting students come to an agreement
Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) management came to an agreement with the student representative council (SRC) following protests on Monday, at the Pretoria West, Arts and Arcadia campuses

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) management came to an agreement with the student representative council (SRC) following protests on Monday, at the Pretoria West, Arts and Arcadia campuses.
Students were protesting after debts have not been paid by National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) to the university in previous years.
Another issue was that Nsfas only pays R45 000 for annual accommodation per student while students, who owe money after staying at more expensive university residences, are prevented from registering.
In the statement released by CFO Theo Madurai, TUT management and the SRC agreed that:
– Graduates will be issued their graduation certificates while the university waits for Nsfas to settle their outstanding fees.
– The university will comply with the February 14 Nsfas decision preventing universities and service providers to charge more than the R45 000 Nsfas accommodation allowance cap.
Since the 2020 academic year, Universities South Africa (USAf) has confirmed that all universities have processes and funding arrangements to assist students with debt so that they can register.
TUT management said that students’ accounts reflecting accommodation costs above the Nsfas capped amount will be adjusted to align with the Nsfas decision to cap accommodation costs.
“Discussions regarding the capping on accommodation are, however, still underway between USAf, Nsfas and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
“A task team will investigate how to manage other categories affected by historical debt, such as missing middle, self-funded and students not fully funded by Nsfas,” the statement read.
