January Masilela Drive upgrade expected to be complete by June

A Tshwane metro project aimed at upgrading a portion of January Masilela Drive in the east of Pretoria is expected to be completed by June.

Contractors appointed by the Tshwane metro are busy with construction works to upgrade the January Masilela Drive and Glenwood Road sidewalks between Atterbury and Lynnwood roads in the east of Pretoria.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigosaid the project started last year in November.

Mashigo said the construction is blocking January Masilela Drive between Lynnwood and Atterbury roads. Work that is presently being carried out is to accommodate public transport (A Re Yeng) as well as non-motorised transport.

To reduce traffic during construction, the metro has an approved traffic accommodation plan in place to minimise the impact of construction on traffic flow.

The local ward councillor has also supplemented the traffic alleviation plan by arranging with Outsurance pointsmen team to assist during peak hours as and when necessary.

“There are temporary construction works signs alerting motorists of obstruction on the road and flag men assist in encouraging speed reduction for road users on the construction site,” Mashigo said.

Pretoria east residents have been informed about the upgrades through public notice platforms such as newspapers and community WhatsApp groups, according to the metro.

“Once the project is complete, the traffic will be improved.”

One motorist Kwande Mahaye said the construction is causing traffic congestion around 07:00 and 16:00.

“I hope this project will finish quickly and the metro should let civil contractors work at night to finish,’’ Mahaye said.
