Mayville residents at wits end with streetlights and power outages

Mayville residents living on Booysen Street are at their wits end with streetlights burning throughout the day.

Mayville residents living on Booysen Street are at their wits end with streetlights burning throughout the day.

According to resident Reinette Fourie, she and her neighbours have lodged numerous complaints with the municipality only for the situation to worsen.

“At first the lights were burning day and night which we felt was an absolute waste,” said Fourie.

“Then suddenly after a month they just burned during the day.”

Fourie said she has sat for hours and hours on the phone with the municipality only for them to supply her with a reference number with no further action taken.

Now the problem has escalated into hours of power outages.

“Almost every weekend we are without power. It has never been like this before and it’s not even according to our load-shedding schedule. We still can’t get an answer from the metro.

“Must we now throw away all the food in our fridge away every time this happens?”

Fourie added that some of her neighbours are starting to feel unsafe with their streets being cast in darkness every night.

She said neighbours have reported seeing strange and unfamiliar cars on the road and strangers meeting each other.

According to Fourie, her neighbours fear that these “meetings” could be drug-related.

“We have never had so much drama in our area before with streetlights and power outages.

“Now we have to deal with children throwing rocks and messing with gate motors.

“We don’t know who to turn to anymore and it’s starting to feel like we are being sabotaged,” said a frustrated Fourie.

The Tshwane metro had yet to provide comment by the time of publication.
