Police arrest two phoney car guards

The suspects, aged 27 and 47 posed as car guards targeting an unsuspecting motorist. Upon searching the two suspects, a knife and a briefcase they had taken out of the vehicle, were found in their possession.

Central police recently arrested two men, posing as car guards, for theft out of a motor vehicle.

According to police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise, the suspects (aged 27 and 47) are believed to have posed as car guards that targeted an unsuspecting motorist.

“The motorist parked their vehicle, a silver Hyundai, at the corner of Madiba and Bosman streets on Tuesday afternoon, April 11, when the phoney car guards ‘assisted’,” Nkhumise said.

“The suspects assured the motorist that they would look out for his vehicle, though after the motorist left, they began breaking into it.”

Nkhumise said a crime prevention team patrolling in the vicinity spotted one of the male suspects inside the vehicle. They quickly acted and approached the two “car guards”.

“An interrogation was held on the spot. Upon searching them, the suspects were found in possession of a knife and a briefcase they had taken out of the vehicle,” Nkhumise continued.

The owner later confirmed to police that he had not permitted the men to access his vehicle.

Station commander Brigadier Dladla applauded sergeants Matlakala and Pouane for an “excellent“ arrest. He further stated that theft out of motor vehicles remains a major problem in the city.

“We urge motorists to park in designated parking areas to avoid falling victim to such crime,” Dladla said.

Police said that they had awareness campaigns about the risks and issued safety tips to motorists.

The two suspects were charged with two counts of theft out of a motor vehicle and possession of the suspected stolen property.

They are due to appear at the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.
