Power restored in areas affected by pylon collapse

The councillors expressed appreciation for the speed with which Tshwane technicians managed to restore power.

Power has been restored to all the areas affected by the collapsed pylons on the N4 east freeway.

This comes after large parts of the north and east of Pretoria were left in the dark on the evening of Sunday, April 9.

The Tshwane metro announced that areas were back on the grid by last night, except for a few network “challenges” that were encountered during the switching back.

Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba noted the following:

– Power has been fully restored at the Mamelodi 2 substation, except for some areas from the Hinterland substation, such as ext. 4, 5, 6
– Vista View, Ikageng, Section 14, 15, Nellmaphius ext. 21 and 24, Phase 1, part of S&S and Mamelodi ext. 5. Sections 12 and 13 have also been restored.
– The Hinterland substation has been severely vandalised. The team found two of its main feeder cables stolen. Power has also been restored to Ikageng and some parts of Mamelodi Gardens and Buffer Zone, except for Sections 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21, due to the stolen cables.
– Mamelodi 1 was restored last night, but it went off again.

Consumers were urged to use power sparingly to avoid possible trips that may occur during switching back.

“The metro would like to ask residents, particularly in Mamelodi, to help it by reporting suspicious activities in and around the substations as vandalism and theft are the main drivers of power outages in the metro.”

Bokaba said that corporate and shared services MMC Kingsley Wakelin and utilities and regional operations MMC Themba Fosi, together with metro officials, led a successful meeting with ward councillors in Region 6 as well as TMPD and SAPS officials to thrash out the power supply and crime issues that plagued certain areas due to the outage.

The SAPS and TMPD undertook to increase patrols in these areas.

“The councillors expressed appreciation at the speed with which Tshwane technicians managed to restore power to large parts of the metro.”
