Centurion residents collect more than 50 bags of food donated to two animal shelters

“I’ve never done a drive like this before and didn’t expect the huge success that it was.”

Centurion residents recently donated more than 50 bags of food to the Wollies Animal Shelter and Adoption Center and the local SPCA branch.

Local Erica de Kock decided to partner up with other residents to assist Wollies after reading about both Wollies and the SPCA’s financial plight in the media.

“My goal was to reach 50 bags of food which we exceeded in only two weeks and two days, thanks to the amazing residents,” Kock said.

Kock said that Wollies and SPCA fully depend on donations.

“The SPCA desperately needs help. The Centurion branch has no management and the staff aren’t even fully aware of who works there and who doesn’t. It’s very sad.

“Their animals only get fed once a day whereas Wollies feeds theirs twice a day. Both were completely different experiences but both needed help.

“Wollies has about 700 dogs and 400 cats while the SPCA branch has much less,” she added.

The community donated 405kg of dry dog food, 11 tins of food, 25 kg pet mince, 13 dog jackets, five dog beds, 15 blankets and 10 kg rice for Wollies.

They also collected 159kg dry cat food, 19 food sachets, cat toys, five cat beds, 12 blankets, 6 food cans and 30kg cat litter for the SPCA.

“I am grateful for the community and how they pulled together to help.”

Kock said she has never done a drive like this before and didn’t expect it to be this successful.

“I will be doing drives every month for various charities and will be working on a 2-3 months cycle, which will always include the SPCA and other animal shelters,” she said.
