Local NGO pays tribute to fallen freedom fighter Solomon Mahlangu
The wreath-laying forms part of a preamble to the NGO’s upcoming “Kool 2B South African flag and freedom appreciation week” which takes place from April 20 to 30.
Local NGO Kool 2B South Africa recently held a tribute ceremony to honour the late Solomon Mahlangu at the freedom fighter’s grave.
The NGO organised a wreath-laying ceremony at Mahlangu’s grave at the Mamelodi cemetery as this year is the 44th anniversary since the apartheid regime executed Mahlangu.
The wreath-laying forms part of a preamble to the NGO’s upcoming “Kool 2B South African flag and freedom appreciation week” which takes place from April 20 to 30.
“We are on a drive of educating our public on the role played by our freedom liberators in bringing freedom to our country,” said president and founder Khaya “Kool” Seoketsa.
“Importantly, we would love to concretise our public on patriotically celebrating freedom month, unlike many other years,” Seoketsa continued.
The NGO plans to pay special tribute to Solomon Mahlangu together with other freedom fighters during their first flag hoisting ceremony to be held on Freedom Day at Freedom Park, Pretoria West.
Kool 2B South African attributes the commemoration to Mahlangu’s final words before his execution, “my blood will nourish the tree of that will bear fruits of freedom”.
The NGO also held a workshop in Freedom Park on the importance of South African patriotism in February which learners from schools around the metro attended.
Freedom Park happens to be the birthplace of the NGO as it was launched there on July 29, 2022, to commemorate Mandela Month but had been in the works in Mahikeng since August 2009.
Aside from Freedom Park, other stakeholders include the Gauteng education department, Tshwane South District, departments of Arts, Culture and Sports and SAPS.
