Local stakeholders clean up Magnolia Dell

The partners in the effort included Okusha.Africa, the World Mission Society Church of God, ASEZ WAO and the Tshwane metro.

Various stakeholders rolled up their sleeves and took to Magnolia Dell this past weekend to take part in a clean-up of the beloved area.

Over 90 volunteers took part in the effort which started at 09:00 and tackled the areas around Walkerspruit River and Magnolia Dell Park, filling up two 10-tonne trucks.

The partners involved in the effort included Okusha.Africa, the World Mission Society Church of God, ASEZ WAO, and the Tshwane metro.

Ward 59 councillor Shaun Wilkinson hopes that efforts such as these will continue to inspire active citizenry in the area.

“The idea is to inspire other people to become active citizens in this movement,” Wilkinson said.

“This is not just a clean-up, we want to inspire tens of thousands of people to start looking after their areas and it starts here,” Wilkinson continued.

Okusha.Africa’s Nicky Russell shared a similar sentiment as he addressed the volunteers before they headed out.

“A lot of people like to say ‘what are they going to do for us’ but it’s time to start asking ‘what can we do?’. It’s up to us to take the responsibility of cleaning up our areas,” said Russell.

Student volunteer group, ASEZ WAO’s clean-up record in the area speaks for itself, nearing 100 clean-ups already.

“If there’s a little light of hope to show the world this can be the way, we want it to be this,” said ASEZ WAO volunteer, Chanelle Booysen.

MMC for environmental affairs Zyanda Zwane was also in attendance alongside various dignitaries from each of the stakeholders.

“We look forward to strengthening our relationship with ASEZ WAO as we would like to see more of this happening,” Zwane concluded.
