Steam supplies restored at Steve Biko hospital
This breakdown affected some of the steam-dependent services at the hospital and nearby facilities such as the Tshwane district hospital.
The steam supply at the Steve Biko academic hospital has been restored, according to the Gauteng health department.
This follows the announcement made last week Tuesday of a breakdown of the steam-generating boilers at the hospital.
This breakdown affected some of the steam-dependent services at the hospital and nearby facilities such as the Tshwane district hospital, the Pretoria oral and dental hospital and the Tshwane rehabilitation hospital.
The dual-fired boiler, which uses gas and light fuel, was restored on Friday (April 21), said Gauteng health department spokesperson Motalabe Modiba.
“The first coal boiler is still undergoing preparation and is expected to be back online between May/June,” he said.
The second coal boiler, which was shut down last week, is still offline pending repair work.
The steam is used for central air conditioning, air heaters, cooking and freezers.
“We are pleased that the breakdown of the steam-generating boilers had minimal impact on the provision of healthcare services to in- and outpatients.
“We are working with our sister department to ensure that we bring the other boiler back online so we always have a backup. The department would like to thank the public for their understanding during this period,” said Modiba.
