Local student joins Golden Key association

Jessica’s impressive first year was not without its challenges, most notably, finding the right institution and degree to pursue.

Local first-year university student, Jessica Fletcher is now among the top 15% of tertiary learners in the world after being accepted into the Golden Key International Honour Society Association.

The Lynwood Glen Varsity College (now) 2nd-year IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management student says that achievement feels surreal.

“If I am honest with myself, I was never really an academic achiever in high school. However, in Grade 11, I realised that achieving academically is not just a great achievement, but also an investment in my future,” Fletcher says.

“So, I decided to pull my socks up and at the end of that year I was awarded full colours for academics, which was something I never imagined in my wildest dreams, and which set the tone for the rest of my academic journey.”

Membership of the Golden Key International Honour Society Association is by invitation only and the world’s largest collegiate honour society for graduate and undergraduate students.

Since 1977, the society has been home to university sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as top-performing graduate students in all fields of study, based solely on their academic achievements.

Benefits of the Golden Key Association include scholarships, career development, networking opportunities, literary services and unique discounts from partnering companies.

Jessica’s impressive first year was not without its challenges, most notably, finding the right institution and degree to pursue.

“For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to study business but because I did not have core maths as a subject in high school, my opportunities to do so were very seriously limited.

“I enrolled for a BA Psychology degree at a top traditional university and after completing my first year I knew that the degree was not for me because my heart was set on studying towards a business-related degree.”

Jessica plans to become a successful businesswoman in the next five years and measures success not on a financial aspect but on how happy one is with the life one lives.

Jessica also believes that entrepreneurship is the key to improving South Africa’s economy, saying: “I believe that entrepreneurship is vital to the South African economy.

“You see a lot of people wanting to leave the country, but my philosophy is: stay, start a business, create job opportunities and improve the economy.”

Head of Academics at The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria, Lieza van der Vyver, commended Jessica on her achievement.
